What is Spotlight Text

Spotlight Text is designed to make e-books accessible to individuals with low vision. Once text is in a digital format, it can be made to specifically adapt to your specific visual needs. Previously, low vision readers required expensive, cumbersome and large stationary desktop magnifiers to read a book. With Spotlight Text you can enjoy all the convenience and mobility of an iPad and read wherever you like. Text can also easily be transmitted from an iPad and displayed on any television with an HDMI input, making font size and screen size unlimited.

The App’s simple user interface was designed to allow even first time iPad users to easily access the world of e-books. You can choose the method of text presentation that lets you read comfortably. Font size can be expanded far beyond what is commonly available in other e-reading applications. The black background and font type were chosen to maximize contrast and reading speed. Dynamic text presentation modes limit the necessity for search and acquire eye movements. You can fixate on a single point and have the text literally come to you.

The App seamlessly integrates with Bookshare’s vast library of 350,000+ titles. Adult readers can enjoy unlimited access and downloads from Bookshare’s collection for a set-up fee of $25 and a yearly membership fee of $50. Children and students join for free. Organizations and some countries can receive discounts. View more details on Bookshare's pricing. Bookshare’s comprehensive library features all current and recent NY Times bestsellers as well as classics and textbooks. The library is constantly being updated with new works by today’s most popular authors such as Stephen King, James Patterson, and Donna Tart.

FAQs

What is Bookshare and how does it work with Spotlight Text?

Bookshare® is an online library of digital books for people with print disabilities. It operates under an exception to U.S. copyright law that allows copyrighted digital books to be made available to people with qualifying disabilities. In addition, many publishers and authors have volunteered to provide Bookshare with access to their works. By requiring individuals to register as Members and provide a Proof of Disability, Bookshare ensures that only qualified individuals use the service.

Bookshare Members download books and textbooks in a compressed, encrypted file. They then read the material using adaptive technology, typically software that reads the book aloud (text-to-speech) and/or displays the text of the book on a computer screen, tablet, or Braille access devices, such as refreshable Braille displays.

What are the visual qualifications for Bookshare?

In order to qualify for Bookshare an individual must have a visual deficit that prevents reading normal print. If you are blind or legally blind you qualify. If you have significant eye disease that prevents you from reading regular sized print you will also qualify.

In order to qualify a Competent Authority must certify your visual disability.

For visual deficits a Competent Authority would be the following:

  1. Doctors of medicine or osteopathy, ophthalmologist, optometrists, registered nurses, nurse practitioners,
  2. Physician assistants, therapists, professional staff of hospitals, institutions, and public agencies (e.g., Lighthouse Guild International)
  3. Teachers of the visually impaired, social workers, counselors, or rehabilitation teachers
  4. Family Doctor
  5. If none of the above is available a local librarian may qualify.

How was Spotlight Text Developed?

Spotlight Text incorporates the latest methodology developed by research on people with visual impairments. The methods of text presentation have been tested on hundreds of patients. This testing was partially conducted by Lighthouse Guild International based in New York City.

What makes Spotlight Text different from other reading softwares on the market?

The user interface of Spotlight is simple facilitating easy downloading and reading of books. No technological knowledge is necessary.
